A pheromone is a substance sign that activates an innate response in other members of the same species. These substance messengers leave the body and have a direct impact hormone levels or behavior. Human pheromones are believed to perform the same way.

Most studies about pheromones have to do with a woman’s menstrual cycle and how they coordinate with other women’s menstrual cycles through undetected odors that the body sends out during this time. Exposure to the sweat of another woman, that was collected during different times of the month, was done to the women in the group.

Depending on when the sweat was collected, the results were that menstrual cycles were affected. The study concluded that two types of pheromones were used in signaling these changes. One for lengthening and one for shortening the menstrual cycle. Due to certain methods used in the study, the results are highly questionable.

A males body releases pheromones as well from the armpit area. It appears that a mans sweat has pheromones in it. Exposing a woman with irregular menstrual cycles to this sweat may cause the cycles to readjust and become normal.

Androstadienone that can be found in a males sweat includes higher amounts of cortisol in women. This substance can be picked up by the nose and may have an effect on the endocrine balance in the opposite sex.

Studies have also been done that show that a certain chemical in women’s perfume increases the likelihood of intimate contact with males. Suggestions that this study has several flaws have also surfaced.

Scent signals that are somehow connected with the immune system may play a role in attracting mates that have no relation to one another. Evidence does exist that displays a difference in how the brain of a homosexual male and heterosexual male react to the two distinctive scents.

Based on the belief that these cause a sexual arousal response, heterosexual women and homosexual men react in the same way. The research then added homosexual women to the group. They responded in the same manner as heterosexual males. The study concluded that pheromones may play a key role in sexual orientation.

Body sprays or perfumes that contain these pheromones are meant to be aphrodisiacs and there is research available that proves beyond question that pheromones attract a mate.
